3/19/2010 Dustin McGowan, SP (Tor) McGowan doesn't expect to start the season on Toronto's roster.

Analysis: McGowan pitched 1 2-3 innings Friday against minor leaguers in his first game in nearly 21 months. "I pretty much knew the situation coming in (to training camp). It was an uphill battle anyway, so I can live with it,'' he said. McGowan left a game on July 8, 2008 because of a sore right shoulder that required surgery. Delays in rehabilitation, including right knee surgery, sidelined him for all of 2009.
3/19/2010 Joba Chamberlain, SP (NYY) Chamberlain gave up one run, two hits and one walk with three strikeouts in three innings against the Phillies on Wednesday.

Analysis: Chamberlain, among five pitchers batting for the fifth starter job in New York's rotation, his spring ERA from 27.00 to 16.20. "I feel great, I went back to having fun," Chamberlain said. "I felt really aggressive. It's just one of those things where once you feel it, you continue to build from that."
3/19/2010 Pedro Feliciano, RP (NYM) Feliciano, the Mets' primary lefty specialist, left Thursday's game against the Marlins in the seventh after being hit in the right knee cap by a Brett Hayes grounder.

Analysis: New York manager Jerry Manuel took him out as a precaution after watching Feliciano throw two warm-up pitches. "I told Jerry I was fine but he didn't want me to risk it. I'll be out there tomorrow," Feliciano said.
3/19/2010 Oliver Perez, SP (NYM) Perez gave up hits to six of the first 13 batters he faced, allowing two earned runs over four innings, in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Marlins.

Analysis: Perez didn't look like the pitcher who tossed four innings of no-hit ball in his last start. Perez, slated to be New York's No. 3 starter, said he settled down after allowing a run on three hits in the first inning. "The more you keep your team in the game, you can get good results," he said. "Right away, we scored two runs. I think that's the job for a starting pitcher: just keep your team in the game and get it to the bullpen."
3/19/2010 Ricky Nolasco, SP (Fla) Nolasco struck out seven of the first 12 batters he faced in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Mets. He threw 23 of his first 30 pitches for strikes, and 45 of 63 by the end of his outing.

Analysis: Nolasco, who struck out 16 Braves in his final start of the 2009 season, has 18 strikeouts in 14 innings over his first three starts this spring. "As long as I'm not walking them," said Nolasco, who allowed two runs on two hits with no walks over five innings. "I'm not trying to strike guys out but I think when you pitch ahead and you get ahead of these guys, their susceptible to swing at a lot of different pitches. I was able to make good pitches."
3/19/2010 Tommy Hunter, SP (Tex) Hunter was scratched just before Thursday's game with a strained rib muscle.

Analysis: Hunter was diagnosed with a strained left intercostal muscle and will be evaluated again on Friday. "I certainly hope it isn't anything prolonged because there's a lot of competition going on," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "The way things are here in Texasland right now, if you go down you might not have a job when you get back."
3/19/2010 Jeremy Sowers, SP (Cle) Sowers, whose spring debut was delayed by a sore shoulder, pitched two pain-free innings as Cleveland rallied for a 6-2 win over the Reds on Thursday.

Analysis: The 26-year-old's career has been a series of highs, lows and in-betweens. He spent last season bouncing back and forth between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus. He even had his first trip to the bullpen. This year, he's not sure what the Indians have in store for him. Because of the inflammation in his shoulder, Sowers has been dropped from the race for one of two openings in Cleveland's starting rotation.
3/19/2010 Ross Ohlendorf, SP (Pit) Ohlendorf struck out two and walked none, giving up four hits - including two homers - in four innings in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Twins.

Analysis: "I feel like I was able to be into the game more in terms of reading hitters' swings, picking my pitches," Ohlendorf said. "I felt really good about today. My changeup was a really good secondary pitch. My sinker and changeup were really good."
3/19/2010 Carl Pavano, SP (Min) Pavano struck out two, walked none and gave up one hit in five innings in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Pirates.

Analysis: A year ago at this time, Pavano said he was still in the process of recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right throwing elbow in 2007. "Last year, I was feeling through my body again," said the 34-year-old Pavano, who joined the Twins in an Aug. 7 trade with the Cleveland Indians. Pavano only started seven big-league games for the Yankees in 2008, going 4-2 with a 5.77 ERA. He went 5-4 with a 4.64 ERA in 12 starts for the Twins last season.
3/19/2010 Hong-Chih Kuo, RP (LAD) Kuo, who hasn't pitched in a week because of elbow soreness, is scheduled to take the mound Friday.

Analysis: Kuo went 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA last season.
3/19/2010 Chad Billingsley, SP (LAD) Billingsley gave up one run on five hits in 4 2-3 innings in Thursday's 7-3 win over the Cubs.

Analysis: Billingsley was an All-Star for the first time last year but struggled in the second half. He has dedicated his spring to correcting a flaw in his delivery. "Everything felt good out there today," Billingsley said. "I'm just kind of fine-tuning things. Today the fastball felt good. I still have some work to do but it felt good and overall I'm happy with it."
3/19/2010 Jason Hammel, SP (Col) Hammel struck out six and allowed just three hits in five innings in Colorado's 9-2 win over the Mariners on Thursday.

3/19/2010 Eric Young, 2B (Col) Young had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run in Colorado's 9-2 win over the Mariners on Thursday.

Analysis: the 24-year-old Young entered Thursday's game with only four hits in 33 at-bats. "People say I'm going to (Colorado Springs) but the only decision that counts is the people in the organization," Young said. "I'm here to prove I can play and help this team. I want to try to turn some heads and that's all I'm concentrating on."
3/19/2010 Barry Zito, SP (SF) Zito gave up one run on four hits, walked three and struck out two in 3 1-3 innings before the Giants rallied for a 6-1 victory over Oakland on Wednesday.

Analysis: Zito left the ballpark before reporters were allowed in the clubhouse. But in previous starts this spring, he said he was looking to make progress with each start in terms of longevity and results, and he appeared to do that on this occasion. He gave up two hits in four innings against minor leaguers in his previous start on March 12.
3/19/2010 Clayton Richard, SP (SD) Richard allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk in 3 2-3 innings in a win over the Royals on Wednesday.

Analysis: "Even when I was missing with my pitches, I was missing where I wanted," Richard said. "I think it was definitely a positive outing. I know the stats don't really relay that message. I was definitely around the strike zone more. I felt my command was a little bit better. There were just a few balls hit hard. That's the way baseball is."
3/19/2010 Mark Reynolds, 3B (Ari) Reynolds hit his second homer of the spring and added a double that led to another run in the Diamondbacks' 7-3 loss to the Athletics on Thursday.

Analysis: Reynolds said he's more relaxed after signing a new three-year, $14.5 million contract on Thursday. The third baseman said that negotiations were "wearing on me a little bit. But now that it's official, it feels good." The 26-year-old Reynolds has emerged as one of the top power hitters in the National League, hitting 44 home runs and driving in 102 runs in 155 games last season. He has 89 home runs, 261 RBIs and a .257 average in three seasons.
3/19/2010 Huston Street, RP (Col) Street received encouraging news when the MRI on his ailing right shoulder revealed no structural damage.

Analysis: The MRI was done Wednesday after Street felt tightness in his shoulder. He felt fine after throwing 25 pitches Monday in a simulated game but felt tightness in the shoulder while playing catch Tuesday and underwent the MRI the following day. Street will not appear in any Cactus League games this spring. He recently signed a three-year, $22.5 million contract after he converted 35 of 37 saves last season.
3/19/2010 Jose Tabata, (Pit) The Pirates have optioned Tabata to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Analysis: The 21-year-old Tabata began last season at Double-A, then batted .276 in 32 games after being promoted to Indianapolis. He also is expected to reach Pittsburgh sometime this summer.
3/19/2010 Pedro Alvarez, (Pit) The Pirates have optioned Alvarez to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Analysis: The 23-year-old Alvarez was drafted second overall in 2008, but signed late and did not play in the minors that year. Last season, he hit a combined .288 with 27 home runs for Class A Lynchburg and Double-A Altoona. Alvarez is being fast-tracked toward the majors and likely will join the Pirates sometime this season.
3/19/2010 Carlos Santana, (Cle) Santana is among seven players optioned by the Cleveland Indians. Santana, considered the top prospect in Cleveland's system, was sent to Triple-A Columbus along with right-handers Hector Rondon, Jeanmar Gomez and outfielder Jordan Brown.

Analysis: Santana needs to work on his receiving skills to get ready for the majors. He's already a seasoned hitter as the switch-hitting 23-year-old batted .352 at Kinston (A) and .290 at Akron last season. He was named the Eastern League's MVP after leading the Aeros to the title. Santana was acquired in a 2008 trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers for third baseman Casey Blake.
